Christmas this year came and went much quicker than I've ever known Christmas to be. It was nice spending the last week with my parents and really close friends. In short, the whole end-of-year season of 2008 can represented by a lot of Guitar Hero, a lot of good food, and a lot of good people. I am grateful for whatever semblance of presents and cards I've received. I didn't get many presents this year but I got perfume, chocolate and cookies, hair product, cash, free meals...

The past two weeks have been fun, but it's passing all too quickly.

On a slightly less personal note, allow me to gush about some things...

I gotta be honest here.

I don't like the LV Sprouse motif. At all.
(so much that i felt compelled to blog about it, but err pretty decent styling though)

I don't think it's surprising since a lot of LV things really aren't my style. I don't know how to believe that because on one hand i practically crave Marc Jacobs day and night, but on the other hand...... I just don't think I believe in spending (heaps of) money on high end labels to begin with, and especially not in spending money on items like these that will definitely go out of style in no time. And, by the term "heaps of money", I am referring to thousands. I could buy an expensive bag or pair of shoes ever so often, but some purchases will just Never Make Sense to me. Never.

Anyway, about the 'It' bag trend that has been looming for years - For a while it seemed like every girl wanted Chanel 2.55. Heck, for a while I wanted it so much. But right now there is just no joy in seeing girls carrying their 'classic' and 'signature' Chanel flap purses down the street with so many other girls carrying replicas of the style, or simply having many people owning Chanel purses too (this i don't get, it seems like Chanel is very affordable). The other day I was at Borders and I read Nina Garcia's 'The One Hundred' and I'm with her on this...... which is, to stop buying them.

Blogging will resume tomorrow when I wake up naturally after I've rested sufficiently. I really need this.

Peaches Geldof has the same birth date as me. I like to think we're related. She's cute, and she looks so regal in this photo (did i use that word correctly?). And I am not a creepy person.

And she also has the cutest friends everrrr. (they took down the post of peaches geldof and her friends on the selby and i happened to hotlink that one time. damn)

I hate to be just reposting things you can already find on the inna netz, so I'm going to rant. I wore my diy bleached tee today. I don't think my friends like it. I saw the black sneakers for sixty four dollars, I am considering. I got my jeans altered for $3 at a shop called Mimsy at peninsula shopping centre, in record time too. I sent it for alteration, went to the bathroom (and walked around a little) and went back to the shop to collect it. I had two big meals today (yay to people who buy dinner). My teacher remembers my name. I like saying "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" to people I meet. So.. One submission and one party to be at tomorrow. I feel busy.

Something also happened at home recently.

This weekend was fun, although I can't quite remember the exact details of anything. All I remember is that I told Amelia "I'm going to live like a mouse till the end of December" because I am so poor after being quite liberal with buying whatever I want, and there are so many social things to do (like see all my friends and that biznazz). And so we did. We went to Starbucks and I was drinking my 35cent-a-bottle distilled First Choice water. Can we justify the extra sugar and whipped cream that we usually pay 6$ for a mug for otherwise? No.

P.S. Amelia, these are the YSL boots that we didn't see in the store yesterday. They are soooooo fierce!

I'm skipping school today. The coldness in the air is awesome. I got these black jeans with zippers and a bag from the Mango sale yesterday. I haven't seen episode 13 of Gossip Girl.

I want to: make red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, finish whatever remnants of work i have (it's making me miserable and depleting my power), run my errands (cards and cups and film)

So about that project I mentioned two entries earlier... well basically I tried to bleach patches on a cotton tee (you know those american apparel acid wash thingies). I have a photo to show. It looks very spotty because i got carried away with splattering. I have a mind to bleach it again after I get sick of this look. But hey, it's fashion, kids. Don't knock it.

The other two photographs are completely random. the second photo is of the sequins mentioned in the last post (and this picture is really out of focus yes). they came from a broken bracelet. Tonight, after using the same camera for coming to 2 years, i finally took some photos in RAW. Exxxxiicting.

I checked out the mango sale today. I probably want to get some jeans, and a bag, but i didn't get them today because i was going to meet some friends and i didn't want to be late. We saw barney and friends at the mall today! The real human beings in real costumes, i mean.

i got a pair of leggings online so that i could slash them (in Rumi style), but now i'm kinda scared to lest i screw it up. i'm not sure if i should go on with it. i also have not been able to find chains that i like.

i'm annoyed that i can't find my shu uemura eyeliner and there's no reason why it should go missing in my house.

tomorrow..... i shall design my xmas cards tomorrow. drop me a note if you want one! i'll try my darndest to make them awesome

This is a bad morning. I'm wearing a completely brand new outfit - some clothes I got from Old Navy but left in my cupboard because I forgot about them. There seems to be a never ending pile of work...... Great, just great.

I'm going to attempt making accessories when I'm more free. I'm thinking of very embellished wristlets and bracelets. I'm gonna need leather straps, beads, chains, studs, maybe zippers. I have ideas in my head already! I also have half a mind to deconstruct a pair of leggings I own to add a zipper down the side.. or make slashes in them.

Checked out GoJane today. I really like these.

I made it a rule not to buy heels more than 5 inches high because I really have trouble walking in them.

It is that time of the year again. I need clothes for the next month of parties and events and to sit and home and watch the rain. I know Christmas is going to be a good time for me. I don't care what I do... I have so much. I want to be happy.

There is just magic in the air on Christmas. It's like, someone sprinkled that day with special gold dust so the air would look shinier. I do kinda hate how Christmas has to be related to some mall and shopping. I like those things but because I like Christmas so much, I hate to see Christmas bastardized by malls.

I haven't been of many words lately. I am myself, and I am good. I just don't quite know what to say.

This is what I wore to work today (not the exact items). My shoes are in black and brown. I feel funny about the fit of the denim jacket and the white tank. My white tank is untucked.

Today is a sleepy morning. I scalded with my hand with some hot water while trying to make me a cup of milo. My hand feels raw.

At lunch time today it was absolutely necessary that I leave the office even though I wasn't very hungry, because there was someone in the office who was asking a lot of questions and I really had no mind (or patience) to deal with the questions so I excused myself and disappeared for a long while. I wandered off to somewhere where there was a small bazaar going on. There was this lady at a table who was making furikake onigiri on the spot. So cute! ^.^ Her items were for a dollar each. I bought a small cup of soup from her because... I wasn't hungry.

I want to / need to find a way to make all of this mine.

I usually don’t like stars as an embellishment for a fashion accessory. They look childish and cheap. They still do, but not all the time. I want those American Apparel jersey dresses in every muted colour.

If there’s one thing I hate, its people who preach to me when they’ve never gone through pain. If you watched last week’s episode of Gossip Girl, Dan was trying hard to do something out of the ordinary because he was chided for writing ‘safe’ stories. This applies to everything. Preachers who preach right from the bible like they understand what they’re preaching, designers who have never gone through crap to actually be visionary, people who constantly tell me I’m not fat when they’ve never felt like me (okay fine, maybe this is a little out of the category), rich girls/boys who claim to have a hard life when… every last detail in their life has been thought out so perfectly for them. It bothers me when designers design things that border on the safe side. I guess that’s what Tim (Gunn) means when he makes that ‘safe’ comment.

Anyway, classes are starting next week. I was thinking of sleeping at Amelia’s place on Thursday nights because class starts so ridiculously early on Friday. It’s drama class though, so I hope that will be fun.

I feel my most creative today. I always believed that pain is necessary for success. All artists and writers and dreamers wrote their best / painted their best when they were sick or drunk or in times of turmoil.

I am at my best.

Wow, it feels like forever since I've posted and I guess it has. But the new job has been zapping up a lot of my energy and my horribly weak immunity system has led to my missing out on today's flea market at House.

Remember this post I posted a while back? Well, I can say what I think about this collection now that I've seen it. My verdict: It is a collection of very neat pieces. Neat as in neat and tidy, and neat as in some pieces wowed me.

The pink dress reminds me a lot of Carrie Bradshaw's in the SATC movie. I like the touch of embellishments she used in the necklaces and the touch on the blazer, and the black pants are so cool. You have to be very careful with pants like that though, if you don't style it up well you will end up wearing them like pajamas. Other than that, the cuts are great.

I don't know what I was expecting, but I was a little bit disappointed to see that none of her extravagance from her python hobo bags were reflected in her collection. So next time when someone mentions the name Devi Kroell to me, I will think of the extravagant and almost over-the-top bags, and a very neat collection.

When I was in Zurich, I came across the best bookstore in the entire world. It is the Orell Füssli Krauthammer bookstore. The shop was beautiful, kind of like a bookstore wonderland. It sells only architecture, photography and design books (or art related). I bought one book from the publisher Taschen, famous for publishing art books.

Fashion Now 2 is a colaboration between Taschen and i-D magazine where they pick out 160 fashion designers from around the world. I love this book, and seeing how most of the pictures used are from i-D, they feature high fashion labels but that are photographed so differently from how most high fashion magazines. I didn't believe the cover model was wearing Prada either.

It's kind of like my designer bible for now. It includes mostly a write up of the designer's credentials and background and some interviews. And loads of pictures. If you are thinking "damn, it looks wordy!", well have no fear because out of the entire page of text, only one paragraph is in English! The other two are in German and French. Great for the kind people who don't read magazines but just look at the pictures (that's me sometimes).

Today I spent a hundred bucks (104 to be exact) on two clutches from Granny's Day Out! The storewide 40% off sale was tempting (even though there wasn't many clothes to buy - maybe all snapped up already) and the man at the store was very persuasive. One of them is vintage Anne Klein and the other is black and Italian, haha.

And I'll be spending the remaining day of my weekend at the Black Market Art event at House tomorrow with Charissa! We have not spent time together in ages, I hope I can buy some really cool things and still not spend too much and just have loads of fun, something.

One of the prettiest looking collections I've seen in a while.

On a day when fashion—make that everyone—could do with some cheering up, Luella Bartley did quite a brilliant job of perking up London's spirits. How that's possible in combinations of mauve, orange, and pink, executed in tweed, lace, and frills, doesn't quite translate to the written word. Yet once the girl got going with the boxy jackets, and the asymmetrical tiered frill skirts, and the big satin hair bows, and the net veils, and the pearl-chain handbags, and the tulle gloves, she had the audience smiling like the financial markets could take care of themselves for a moment.

Long story short: I've not been posting in a long time and I've missed this place. Switzerland was beautiful, and Zürich is such a nice city. I don't know how to start dissecting bits of everything I saw and did, so.... maybe later.

Okay. So, remember the last post where I posted this entry about me owning a dress so similar to the Prada Fall 08 collection? Well I learnt that all the lace from the collection is from St. Gallen, Switzerland. And that's the town I was staying in while I was there! The New York Times has an article about that called Playing the Lace Card, in case anybody is interested.

I don't know where and how to gain my blogging momentum back. I feel like I need to walk around in town and be able to speak English (or singlish) to people everywhere to feel like I'm back home. I can already imagine the crowds of Orchard Road or anywhere else, and that is the one thing I will not miss no matter where I go.

And so right now, here's this for entertainment. All over cyberspace these few weeks, I've seen many blogs gushing about the work of Todd of The Selby. Seeing the inside of the Nylon office? Alexander Wang's studio? Or Erin Wasson's super cool apartment? I know it was an eye opener to me, I don't know about the rest of you (why do they have such good looking clutter!). Well anyway, I was bored one day so I took photos of my room in my best Todd Selby-esque style. They're mostly photos up close! My room wasn't decent otherwise, sorry!

The only thing more exciting (for me) than fashion week, are all the different outfits you see off the catwalk. Inevitably, I am partial to the New York scene like every other girl who has watched all 6 seasons of Sex and The City...repeatedly. For the most part, fashion blogs are about personal style, or street style and inspiration comes from everywhere; being a total trend whore doesn't really do any real people (ie, non-models, non-celebrities, non-airbrushed) justice, so we should all up the ante and look beyond the runway.

P.S Yes, we'll still talk about S/S 09 ;)

This is old news by now, but for those of you who haven't heard or read about the latest Vogue India photo spread - you should. I know that fashion has always been controversial but there's a fine line between tasteful and tacky - and this spread is flirting with it. Yes, Priya Tanna (resident Vogue India editor) is right when she says that fashion is fun and shouldn't be taken so seriously, but poverty is a real issue, no? I'm not sure how appropriate it is to be combining both elements.

You know, but, that's just me. Thoughts?

Two days in blogosphere terms is an eternity, but the past 48 hours were spent toiling over this space I assure you. Less in the sense of posting and more about the direction that our space is heading towards. While we absolutely adore fashion and style, we involve ourselves in many other things as well; so there might be a few changes around here, ie the blog might take a more lifestyle approach but of course, still encapsulating fashion! Once my partner in crime is back from the land of cheese, watches and neutrality, we'll have a more definite standing for you. This piece of news caught my eye when I was surfing Style.com today.

I can't say I'm crazy about the bags and accessories, but Devi Kroell has definitely created some very interesting pieces. Her signature metallic python hobo bags were very fresh when they first came out, but I don't know about you - I grew tired of them soon. But I'll give her some credit(and time); these clutches from her fall collection really call out to me, if you know what I mean.

I've been wanting to get a tiny box clutch like that for the longest time.

So my conclusion is: Will be keeping my eyes on her for this collection!

I'm leaving tomorrow. Packing only now at the very last minute in my laissez-faire fashion as usual. I hope I don't forget anything.

This should have been posted a long time ago, but I have to say that I was thrilled when I saw the black lace pieces from Prada's Fall 2008 RTW collection on the covers of a few fashion magazines all around the same time (perhaps a month or two ago). I was super excited because... I have a lace dress very much like that, created by the forward-thinking designers of Miss Selfridge!

Fall Fashion Rundown: Shoes

It's not much of a surprise, is it? I personally attribute the world's suddenly bigger obsession with shoes after this year's Sex And The City movie, and yes, of course those crazy Dior Extremes. Before we begin dissecting and examining all of Fall's fabulous offerings, remember to visit net-a-porter for your last summer buys (with further discounts).

Statement shoes are still the It shoe this fall, as it has been for awhile now, and as much as I do not appreciate the gladiator, there has been some reworking of sorts by Jonathan Kelsey, that might change my mind. Lots of metallics and patents appeared in this year's collections, as seen in Thakoon for Hogan (www.hoganworld.com) and Marni, amongst others. I think I'd like having shocking-coloured shoes for fall. As it is, our mundane weather is made worse by the incessant rain, and there's nothing like crazy shoes to perk you up, no?

However, the Fashion Authority (aka Vogue) has also selected some wonderfully romantic shoes to oppose the hardness of this season; which is also appropriate, as designers have (again) shown florals for fall. But mix and match we say, and pair those Bruno Frisoni shoes with a T-dress from AA and accessorize with lots and lots of pearls.

Also, lots of bows were spotted, not just on shoes but on everything from dresses to bags. I'm sure we all have a pair of bow ballet pumps - so there, that's something we can strike off the buy-list. And don't forget booties; ankle lace-ups are the best.

Whew, these posts are harder to put together than you'd think. Time for more mellow music and a nap - good night.

I am sorry about the break in my posting routine. I was busy with a few things. In short: Exams, Work, Travel Plans, (trying to keep to) my Exercise Routine, and meeting up with friends. I spent last night at ICE3 being stuffed with good conversation, friends, waffles and ice cream. Excess is fantastic, and rum & raisin ice cream is even better.

If you read the title, it's true! I'm going away... to Switzerland for two weeks to live with some relatives (live, two weeks, lol). I forgot what Europe is like, so this is my chance to discover and explore for myself. This is a good time too, seeing how I haven't rested a day since my semester ended.

Over the week I saw an ad in the classifieds for Uni Qlo. They are recruiting merchandisers so it's official, they'll be here in 2009! It's going to be brought in by Wing Tai Asia. I am such a big fan of those crazy time-wasting games / noise makers they have up on their website (and of course the clothes too). The entry of a traveled brand like Uni Qlo will create a really vibrant shopping environment over here.

Other things: I can't wait for the new season of Gossip Girl, more Blair, more fab clothes, more gossip (somehow the boys in GG just don't make me swoon). And then this Sunday is the Nike+ Human Race... ah, I know I'll wing it.

So anyway, my mind has been thinking of how to dress for the cool weather in Switzerland. It's slightly cold-ish so I think all my leggings and tights will finally have a real use! Okay, and I lied. My mind has been making mental notes of things that I want very very much. Here's two right now.

Gearing Up For Fall

Many apologies for the slow news rate the past couple of days - I've been holed up reading all 798 pages of Vogue, and yes, a huge post of fall fashion will be up soon. A lot of good browsing today in town with my favourite gay friend (and his favourite gay friend) because most f/w stock have just arrived! My favourites of the day were the Varina flat from Salvatore Ferragamo (the new fall colours are gorgeous), the Loewe Nappa Aire, overpriced floral blouse from Chloe and bow hair band from Miu Miu. Yes, I am all shopped out, and no, I have not purchased any of the above-mentioned items.

A Freebie....Well, Sort Of

Most times we complain that Singapore is extremely slow on the fashion circuit, but for once, I can appreciate this pace. Before we say hello to F/W 08, I have found a very appropriate way to kiss my summer goodbye.

After being told at Kinokuniya Takashimaya that all the lookbooks from Marc by Marc Jacobs S/S 08 were sold out, my friend, S and I were sorely disappointed. But during our national library stopover to read The New Yorker, we decided to try again at their Bugis outlet. AND WE FOUND IT. We also managed to hide a couple of copies under some very questionable Japanese magazines, so if you want yours, make a trip down right now.

The best thing from this is the free tote that comes along with it. I was surprised at how sturdy it was, and the knot detailing of the handles makes it all the more worth its less-than-30SGD price tag. Also, all the S/S 08 MBMJ collection is covered in here, peppered with adorable anecdotes from the MBMJ NY staff.

See how good it is to be visiting book stores every day? You should all make a habit of that now.

Earth-friendly, heehaw

I try to recycle, save power, and walk to wherever I can to reduce my carbon footprint, but I wouldn't go as far to call myself an environmentalist. After all, discounting shopping at flea markets, I am not eco-friendly in my fashion choices (ie. I've never bought an earth-friendly article of clothing or accessory).

Still, I think its great to see that fashion is also working towards a better environment. I'm well aware that big fashion houses have the resources and finances to create eco-friendly collections in the name of saving the earth, but what about designers in the local area? Today, I discovered a label named SOUVENIR and they are all about redirecting the prevailing focus from disposable and excessive trends towards intelligent and ecologically-minded designs that will endure.

This video features clothes from their SS/08 collection. I love it! The collection of pleated bottoms (skirts, trousers, shorts) and t-shirt dresses are simple, but kept interesting by adding dashes of colour for a colour block effect. I like them a lot! The entire collection is completely what I would wear.

Souvenir is only sold at five locations within LA and New York for now, so I will just have to admire their work through cyberspace. You can see larger pictures of their collection here.

Design + Functionality

While my boyfriend spends his 10th hour in bed, I have already consumed a huge amount of cereal and have gone through less than a tenth of my daily Internet reading. But I did stumble onto something that makes me very excited on a Monday morning (morning for me, afternoon for you).

So, being quite the livejournal whore, I was reading ADIML and this adorable couple from Manchester, UK, had equally adorable mugs on display. Meet the Mocha Dunk Mug! And because I am lazy, and could probably not provide a more adequate description, I quote The dual purpose Dunk Mug is a C&M favorite and a fun addition to any bedtime snack ritual. The Sunday Express calls this clever mug "a must-have for every cookie lover." We concur. A hidden cookie compartment allows you to sip coffee or tea and nibble on your favorite sweets with minimal cleanup. Cookie plates are a thing of the past for us. Recently I've gone quite mad with shoes. Obsessing over footwear is a very recent phenomenon for me. For a while I was starting to believe I did not belong to my family because my mother and my sister have a very apparent love for shoes but it just wasn't so for me.

I love towering heels. And I have fabulous high shoes that are nearly impossible to walk in, but I think I have an undying love for flat shoes for how comfortable and wearable they are. I've particularly taken a liking to ballet flats with cute embellishments. Here are some I found online in the past hour that I really like.

Anyway, it's really late now. I'm going to give the Zouk flea a miss tomorrow, but I am going to PS Cafe for brunch. I also cut and dyed my hair last week. Pictures may follow.

After I managed to lose my wallet and iPod (along with an incriminating make-up stash for a 15 year old) at BCBG 4 years ago, I swore off the brand. But while the clothes never really fascinated me anyway, this French label's fall collection and the new BCBGeneration for the younger set, are both awesome in their own right.

The fall collection features a neutral palette and clean lines; dresses with a lot of cinched waists - which, of course, I am partial to. But mostly it's because Max Azria didn't place an emphasis on coats/outerwear, which makes these runway looks all the easier to pull off in our balmy weather. Also check out bcbgeneration - the collection's divided into City and Casual which, pretty much explains itself. Expect everything from oversized sweaters (casual) to blazers (city), which are so hot right now. However the collection's only available in the US, so pay the site a visit and bitch about how we always get left behind (ahem, H&M).

Maybe it's time I forget my 4 year old scarring and pay the store a visit. This time I'll make sure that someone holds my bag for me, outside the changing room.

I've kept this photo of Vanessa Carlton for a really long time because I really liked her dress. It is too cute. I'm still entertaining the idea of making a dress like this on my own, but I completely overlooked the fact that all I know about sewing and the sewing machine has not progressed at all since Secondary 2 Home Econs classes.

I found a similar dress when I was surfing the net today!

Prints-wise and shape-wise, they are very similar. Length-wise, no. But then again this dress looks nice enough on it's own and I'm not sure at all if it would be of any justice to the dress if I took inches off the hem.

To buy or not to buy? Damn decisions.

I painted my nails yesterday

It's not that I don't wear polish, I just don't wear it all the time. Seeing the colour on my nails every time I forgot I had them on is kinda fun. This is my first time wearing a shade of canary yellow like this.

In other news, I got a job, my exams are nearing, and my Old Navy package is coming for me soon. I am also currently reading the IKEA 2009 catalog.

As promised, I tried out sticking a feather onto a hairband and it really isn't that hard. Found a pretty pheasant feather and colour matched it to a skinny gold hair band - and voila, instant fabulous-ness. Anyway I am rushing off for my boyfriend's cousin's birthday party and then I've to slog on an art piece for school. So....go try this out and post pictures!

about fake eyelashes

I'm not sure who hasn't seen this yet. I've seen quite a lot of coverage on Viktor & Rolf's collection of eyelashes for Shu Uemura even though I've been a country mouse and staying put in only my side of town lately. Apparently, my friend Florence said there were roadshows at Tangs and the Paragon.

Personally, I like Viktor & Rolf. And I think the eyelashes are beautiful, but only as art pieces.

I have a pair of fake eyelashes, from MAC. I got them because I thought I should have a turn at trying out fake eyelashes. I've tried them on two times and I'm sad to say that I've successfully disfigured their shape. Okay, I was almost about to go out in them once, and then at a last minute check in the mirror, I didn't like them so I plucked them off.

I don't know what my stand on fake eyelashes are. And you know, who really wants to end up looking like those doe-eyed Taiwanese dolls... Not I.

These outfits look almost effortless. I especially love her slingbacks in the first picture. But when it comes to plaid shirts, I'm not sure if I'd go right for it either.. seeing how I am apprehensive about most trends. But I just had to gush about these.

Hair-bands Not Head-bands

After reading Shing's last post, I was very tempted to write you my own list of things that I dislike, but I have decided to instead share something with you that I have recently taken a liking to. (But for the record my most hated statement, not trend, is cleavage/eyeliner/false eyelashes overload)

My younger sister recently had the mgs version of prom, aka founders day and her friend (hi megan) sported a fabulous feather headpiece, which is basically a pretty feather stuck onto a hair band. The last hairband rage I remember were the jewel embellished hair bands a couple of seasons ago. However the latest hair wear are now head chains and head bands, which frankly, not everyone can pull off.

But you don't have to pull all your hair back to wear the hair band fabulously which means that this is for everyone.

Then in August's Mischa-adorned Nylon, I found the perfect site that sells these gorgeous things for quite a reasonable rate. This is my favourite:

most hated fashion trend

My friend asked me today what my most hated fashion trend was. I took a while to think of something, and then I said,
"T-shirts with stupid proclamations on them."

Then the next thing I said was: Skinny jeans and flip flops. (What I really mean is wearing skinny jeans with flip flops. Some people look fine in them but some look really sloppy. I am adding this in to save myself from the wrath of anybody who does that.)

She said "Headbands!" immediately.

We are undecided on the leggings trend.

I think most trends are okay to begin with. Just wear the trends, don't let the trends wear you.

Something I am learning only recently is about dressing for your body shape and the importance of tailoring clothes to fit. It's important to know about what styles and shapes look good on you.

I also dislike
- skirts / shorts that are too short
- skirts / shorts that are too short worn with heels
- trucker caps
- rapper / hip hop clothes
- multiple ear piercings (it annoys me when people wear it like it's fashion)
- tinsel hair extensions (have you guys seen these? i've seen a few and i swear it looks absolutely stupid. People literally have strands of those in their normal hair pretending it's absolutely normal. So stupid)

This = Stupid

I don't like it when I see everybody dressing the same, carrying the same bags, having the same hair. Sometime last year a whole load of girls I knew suddenly started sporting a concave bob, due to some media influence.

I don't know. I'm very tired.

in my designer mode

I have a creative journal due exactly at this time tomorrow. Which means I have 24 hours to submission. Now, in this time I have to do close to almost 40 good entries on my creativity (and I really lost count, but it should be less than 40). The journal is really just supporting evidence and documentation that all designers and / or artists usually have to submit with along with their work. Something like a book on what inspires you, something like your idea creation on how the final product came to be. All designers who attend design school go through this, and they know this component is equally important as the finished product itself. You can add in whatever things you want... you can do it in whatever way you want but it just has to reflect your design. Basically, most designers take this quite seriously.

Sometime during the week, I went down to the library and I discovered Wallpaper* magazine. The magazine is great. There was an article on Dieter Rams, a German industrial designer regarded as one of the most influential industrial designers in the 20th century. Prior to that, I had never heard of him before.

To cut the story short, I was inspired! There was a lovely story in Wallpaper* that featured his tenets of design and how he applied them in his objects. They can be applied to any relative of design. You can see them here.

Note: The writer is a student of Mass Communication (and not in design school, if you were wondering) and is required to do design modules in her first and second year of study. She has no real intention of becoming a designer in the future, but she can appreciate good design.

These are the ugliest bags I've seen in a while.

My problem with these is that every bag has a tacky embellishment on it. The bags look like the kind you can buy at Asian souvenir stores as gifts for your relatives, as proof that you visited.. somewhere in Asia.

Everyone should stick to what they do best. I don't know what Mischa's calling is but I don't think it's in bags or fashion.

Coachella vs. Singfest - Shoes

So while Shing has kindly blogged on a fairly regular basis, I have been eaten up by the terrors of work. But I have, of course, been diligently stalking fashion blogs, style.com and every other worthy fashion site for your benefit. And I know a couple of posts ago S did an update of the music festivals that have happened/are happening, so let's discuss the item that can make or break your outfit: shoes.

Now, I know Singfest is nowhere near as famous as Coachella (California's biggest annual outdoor music festival for the uninitiated) but that doesn't mean that the fashion can't be as awesome. Although we're in no desert, the weather can get pretty disastrous as we all know; so remember your sunblock and covered shoes - you don't want overexcited groupies trampling on your favourite pair of heels/slippers and ruining your feet in the process. Personally I'd go for a pair of Keds or Chucks since they're reasonably priced and are always classic.

I've been seeing pictures of celebrities and people wearing headbands around town. I can't say I've bought on to the trend, but this picture of Ashley Olsen has sparked my curiousity in headbands. I've tried a few before and actually I don't think I'd do too well in this look, but I have to say that for the above picture, Ashley looks so chic in an biker-meets-hippie sort of way.

Even though I may never be suited for this look (because of my face shape), that does not stop me from searching for nice options to try. I found these from Forever21.com. I think this piece is the most similar to Ashley's.

These are great alternative options.

They cost less than 4USD a piece so it's really inexpensive and it may just work for you

I am quite terrible at smiling and posing for photographs. Most of the time, I give the camera my biggest grin and if i do something with my hands, they're either spread out wide, or doing something lame like the twist sign.

Anyway, about the outfit. I got my inspiration from WWWD's report on t-shirt dressing. Here are some extra photos of the dress i was wearing and of accessories similar to what i was wearing.

beauty arsenal

Not that anyone would be particularly interested, but i decided that of all the posts I'll do on this blog, this should be one of the first. I made a very random and rather slipshod polyvore of my favourite beauty products. Well, this is some of it, they don't have all the brands I like, like ZA. And some other stuff.

I know the picture is tiny, but you can click on it to see the enlarged pictures on the polyvore site. Row by row from left to right, top to bottom. Here's what they are and why I like them.

Carmex Lip Balm helps me forget about my chapped lips misery because it works like a charm.
Body Shop Vitamin E Body Butter not really for scar lightening (what vitamin E promises), but because it smells good and the texture is not heavy.
Rosebud Lip Salve not only serves as a good lip balm, its nice glossy pink sheen is nice lip gloss too.
Shu Uemura Blush in Peach 44 makes me look awesome every morning.
Clinique Pore Minimizer reduces the appearance of pores instantly, so on days when I feel like my face is ready to see the world in its naked form (quite often), I just apply this and blush. Or something.
Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil removes every last trace of make up from my skin and gives me the feeling of a really, really clean face.
Shu Uemera Eyeliner Pencil does not smudge at all unlike MAC, although MAC has more intense colours.
Kiehl's Lip Balm in 30G adds a nice reddish sheen to add to my lips (I'm not really a fan of lipstick) and is very conditioning.
Stella by Stella McCartney perfume has been my favourite scent for a while now.
Body Shop Lip and Cheek Stain gives natural looking red cheeks and lips and it's easy to apply and inexpensive.
Eyes Lips Face Eyeshadow Palette and only this particular one because the colours are very wearable.
Lancome L'Extreme Mascara stays on for a long time, and it also seems to separate my lashes.

Things I discovered about myself: I have a lot of lip balm, I quite like Shu Uemura and I don't wear much make up to begin with.

I also discovered the irony of me being a non fan of lipstick.

a photography event

Tonight i went to Old School at Mt Sophia for the first time. I've been there before, but that was before it was marketed as the fancy enclave it is now. It was a building and the tenants were centres for foreign degrees. And that was in like, 2005 when I was in this school event where we MGS girls were on a car rally to discover bits of our past. Something like that. I was there tonight to attend my friend Stacy's photography exhibition. Not her own (not now anyway, but someday) but with her coursemates at Temasek Polytechnic. There were a few awesome things about tonight.

This photograph from the exhibition was one of my favourites. I don't quite know why, but probably it's because the man in the red hoodie looks.. nice. I had other favourites, but they aren't on the event's flickr page so I guess that would mean if you want to see them, you can take a trip down to Old School.

I enjoyed the exhibition because there were a good selection of photographs, and you know, you can see differences between each individual's work. Some people took photos of nature, some took photos of people (my fave), and in all it consisted of a lot of great perspectives. It was like, the creativity from a lot of brains. And then of course it was great fun.

Anyway, the exhibition is at 2902 Gallery at 11b Old School. It's on from now to the 1st of August and you can buy postcards of the photographs at the venue, along with badges and other things. The people behind the exhibition have a blog here.

Back to talking about Old School. It was beautiful but I didn't have time to explore the place tonight. Not tomorrow either although the RSC Block Party is taking place there tomorrow. I am swamped with assignments. But I will be back there soon, perhaps for a movie and lunch.

The Good News, and the not so good

The good news: I bought a great pair of shoes recently. They are kind of comfortable and very stylish. Also, it cost me merely $39.90 (but to be honest, it cost me nothing because these were paid for by someone else).

The bad news, is that because it's from Charles and Keith and very affordable, lots of people already have them!

And that is enough already. Knowing that people will wear the same shoes as you. I mean, who actually likes that?!

Anyway, on a separate note, the other day I was at Central at Clarke Quay and I just strolled into Charles and Keith with no intention of getting anything and I was quite surprised to find pretty shoes there, and all inexpensive too. So that's why it's usually always quite full of people... I finally have an idea. Nothing negative about Charles and Keith, just that I've ignored it for too long. I shall go to the outlet store when I can find the time to.

I also just bid on a pair of platform shoes on ebay. They are very cute but I hope they are in decent condition too.

1. Comfort Is Key.
2. You can get away with wearing things you can't on any other regular day

Does anyone not like American Apparel? I think not.

3. Mens Magazines (case in point: GQ)
Because reading girly magazines all the time can get a little bit boring. But really GQ is fab, I even like it better than a lot of the mens magazines of this genre out there. The photography is great. Layouts are great, and the writing style of the articles are always snappy and correctly sarcastic.

I think it's obvious by now I'm always really drawn to photos and layouts and great typefaces.

When it comes to shoes...

I can be boring when it comes to shoes.

I don’t spend a lot of money (or time) on shoes and all the shoes that I own are probably just enough for just about every occasion pertinent to my life right now. I buy shoes for two good reasons.

The first reason: I-like-what-she's-wearing.
The second: I desperately need something to match my dress and those I have just won't do

On a night like this when I should be finishing a news article, I found myself searching for a great pair of sandals after I saw this photo of Ashley Olsen (If you must know, my urge was brought upon by the first reason.)
